I recently tried to access my account using a PC and was unable to login as I needed a webcam to verify who I am, whatās that all about. I donāt have a cam nor plan to get one. Surely thereās a way to get online without one. Such an over reach imo.
Yes, this has been raised in the last two weeks. My response suggested that someone who invests in stocks and shares should be able to afford a cheap usb camera.
Just tap in the login security code they send to your mobile⦠think of it like an old school entry key card. it literally takes a few seconds.
Personally I find the security hoops reassuring.
While this level of security is good. For desktop Iād like it easing up, sessions timeout too soon, and ask for more codes. The option to require codes on initial session log on only. Basically as it was, but with the 2FA on startup.
Why should we buy a usb camera just for a one off verification? All it should take is using what we already have, our phone. Simply use the phone and the app to verify the web gui. Simple. Thatās all the need to implement. Forcing someone to buy a camera is not a solution.
I know this is a real pain, but I have two suggestions:
Just buy a usb camera. Cameras which appear to be fully functional are available for under £5.00.
Assuming that you have a Windows 10 or 11 desktop PC then use the (free) Windows connection app to connect your mobile phone to the PC wirelessly. Then you can set your PC to use the camera as if the camera was directly connected to the PC. Indeed I have just done that and was able to switch between the integrated camera on my laptop and the phoneās camera. So it must work on a PC with no camera.
I should have mentioned that once a device has become (re-become) trusted then you only need to re-verify when they change the system. I use 2 laptops and I had to verify each of them only once earlier this year and not since.
I also find this annoying and frustrating, why cant we use our phone camera to verify that we asked for a pc to be trusted? also twice now I have gone to sell some shares and the pc app had timed out and by the the time logged back in, the stock had lost few % and therefore I lost money. Iām all for more security but there has to better way than this. either make the sessions valid on our trusted devices till we close the app or maybe they can implement windows passkey like google wallet does?
I am fairly certain that is exactly what I did last month.
As I mentioned earlier you can connect your phoneās camera to be your PCās camera using Windows link.
My understanding is that you can only use a trusted device to trust another device.
I had/have the following trusted devices: Laptop 1, Laptop 2 and an Android Phone. [I cannot remember how the first device was trusted.]
Normally I use Laptop 1 but soon after this new system was introduced I had to use Laptop 2. Upon logging on to Laptop 2 it said that it was not a trusted device and they had sent a text to my phone. I did the video portrait routine on my phone and that took me back to Laptop 2 and that was it. Later I had to do the same thing for Laptop 1 (i.e. get that re-trusted). Since then I have used all 3 devices with no logging in required for the Laptops and only the fingerprint needed for the phone.
Logging in on the phone is fairly instant but it in investing it is normal that sometimes something goes wrong, so you need to allow for that in your investing strategy and timing.
Having not used my phone for many days (for T212) I have just logged in to T212 and it was instant. All it needed was the usual fingerprint authentication. Indeed, how are you authenticating your phone logon? I strongly recommend using the fingerprint sensor.
I have just logged out on the phone and logged in again solely with my password (i.e. no fingerprint) and it was happy with that.
I have looked on my phone and my laptops and I see that I have enabled two-factor authentication using "āTrusted device verificationā. Have you enabled that on all your devices to log onto T212?
I hope that is helpful because I really cannot understand what your issue is.
I use that system on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Ultimately that is the T212 system and I found a solution for you. However, the simplest system is to pay £5 and buy a USB camera for your PC.
If you do not like it then I suggest that you close your T212 account.
We all have to live with organisationsā security systems which are mainly caused by regulations imposed on them by the authorities (which is a political minefield not for this forum) plus people having their money stolen.
Youāre right, we do have to live with them, and thatās why weāre providing feedback based on those experiences. Thatās why weāre here saying itās overkill, onerous and cumbersome.
Closing our accounts is an option. Some of us donāt want to, thatās why weāre here offering feedback; and ironically, even closing accounts is now that bit more difficult.
