Will Bitcoin ETNs be available from October 8 under UK?

Hi, FCA is lifting the ban on BTC ETNs starting October 2025:
https://www.fca.org.uk/news/press-releases/fca-opens-retail-access-crypto-etns

Will the ETNs become available under the UK entity as well? Currently they are View-only e.g. WBTC (WisdomTree Physical Bitcoin).

Trading 212 only offers them under the EU/Cyprus entity. I assume UK will follow?

Thanks.

Hey, @AlinMC :waving_hand:

We’re aware of the news and we’re looking into the possibility of adding such instruments as part of our UK entity in the future. While there’s not much to share on the topic currently, I’ll follow up here once October gets closer or as soon as we have any specific updates :raising_hands:

@notfinancialadvice, that’s not something we can confirm at this stage.

Hi, given I’ve just completed your ā€˜Get ready to trade crypto ETNs’ pre-requisite questionnaire, I would imagine T212 must now have a list of intstruments you plan to make available to uk investors….?

@_SP - how do you access this questionnaire by the way?

Yeah, Further to the above query, is there any definitive news yet on Crypto ETN’s (such as IBIT in ISA’s for UK investors from the 8th October?

FCA opens retail access to crypto ETNs | FCA

Suspect they’ll be quite the demand!

How did you find this, I can’t see it in the app?

OK, I got it. So I logged into Trading 212 Stocks ISA via the browser (on my laptop) and then ā€œHomeā€œ tab at the top (in my case it defaulted to my ā€œPortfolioā€œ tab as that’s what I normally visit) then there was a banner just under ā€œAccount Valueā€œ and above ā€œTop Winners | Top Losers | Global Markets ā€¦ā€œ . Looks like this:

IBIT is a crypto ETN?

If it’s US-domiciled ETF, FCA won’t allow it, as also it doesn’t allow with other US-domiciled ETFs.

Hi, I was on the website, not the ā€˜app’ - it was on my Stock ISA home page (house icon). On that page, top left there is a new account value widget. Below that and above the watchlist section, there was a small panel that advertised taking the questionnaire ahead of crypto ETNs being available on T212 on 8th Oct. The same panel was scrollable and had something else being advertised.

This panel is now gone for me, so I can’t screenshot it.

Edit: I also can’t find any evidence or record via my Account/Profile/Settings that I have taken the questionnaire and / or passed it. So I have no visible record.

I didn’t had that banner, but i refreshed the T212 web platform several times to remove the cookies/update the T212 platform (it was 7.9.4 version, and now is 8.0.0 version). And now it appears in left side panel of the T212 platform:

I see part of the quiz is agreeing to become a ā€œRestricted Investorā€ for 12 months, with less than 10% of net worth in high-risk investments.

Could you please define this? There’s a FAQ here via Google but it’s down at the moment.

Does high-risk cover only crypto or all ETNs in general?
e.g. LQQ (2x Nasdaq ETF) is considered high-risk? What about QQQ3 (3x Nasdaq ETN)?

And how will this be enforced?

Thanks!

Self-enforced, since how can any one financial organisation know your net worth which could and should be spread around multiple ā€˜pots’.

@AlinMC - ā€œRestricted Investorā€ is a classification defined in the COBS 4 Annex 5: Restricted Investor Statement. It means that a client confirms they will limit their investments in high-risk products to no more than 10% of their net worth (excluding real estate).

Regarding your second question, leveraged and inverse ETPs are indeed considered high-risk.

@Fooblah - There isn’t a direct link, but you can restart the process from the ā€œUnlock Crypto ETNsā€ banner on the home screen.

Here’s an updated link to the relevant article.

Is it Trading212 that is deciding only Bitcoin and Ethereum are available in the UK as cETNs, or is this a directive from the FCA?

Reading the documents, it’s the regulator.

Hi,
7 days ago I completed steps 1 &2 successfully. Step 3 has occured (>24h has passed), but I’ve not had anything triggered by T212 for step 4….

ā€Final Confirmation: After 24 hours, confirm you still want to trade.ā€

Care to share the document? I’ve read Trading212’s page and FCA docs related to cETNs, seeing no specific mention of the underlyings permitted behind the them other than from 212. The FCA shouldn’t be deciding the underlying only the framework behind which they’re permitted so I’m hoping this is a 212 decision at launch that they then quickly expand the suite of offerings.

It’s seems that the ā€œgatekeeperā€ is London Stock Exchange:

@Veselin.V

In October 8, non-resident UK customers (in T212 UK platform) can buy EUR-denominated crypto ETPs listed on Continental Europe Stock Exchanges (e.g. Xetra)?
