It’s been almost two years since Trading212 proudly announced portfolio transfers, and yet here we are in 2025: still no option to transfer out to Interactive Brokers.
The irony?
IBKR is your custodian.
Transfers into T212 from IBKR accounts are possible.
But the moment a customer wants to move out to IBKR, suddenly it’s “not possible because IBKR is our custodian.”
How does that make sense? If IBKR can send positions to your omnibus account, why can’t you carve out my positions and send them back the other way? Other brokers manage to handle in-specie transfers between omnibus and retail accounts.
Instead, customers who want to move to IBKR have to either:
Liquidate, withdraw cash, and re-buy (with all the market/tax/timing risks), or
Do a clumsy two-step transfer via an intermediate broker.
At this point, “IBKR as custodian” feels more like an excuse than a technical impossibility. Two years later, it’s becoming harder to explain why this hasn’t been addressed.
So my questions are:
Is there any concrete plan to add IBKR as a supported outbound broker?
If not, can you please be transparent and tell us if it’s a business decision (you don’t want to allow it) rather than pretending it’s a custody barrier?
Because right now, it feels like the only direction of travel is: IBKR → T212 yes, T212 → IBKR no. And that’s not exactly a great look for a broker that claims to be client-first.
We are working on this. We’re currently testing and setting up the back-office processes for outbound in-specie (stock) transfers to Interactive Brokers. It’s not a straightforward implementation, precisely because IB is one of our custodians, which means it requires significant development work and coordination on both sides. Therefore, we are unable to provide an ETA.
The concrete plan is to support these transfers, starting with outbounds. Once outbound transfers are going through successfully, we’ll follow up with inbound transfers as well, so the process works both ways.
It is a bit confusing though, since you are mentioning that you are working on outbound transfers first and then on the inbound transfers, but the inbound transfers (IBKR → T212) already seem to be supported - see the attached snip.
I spoke with multiple IBKR agents today, and all of them confirmed that IBKR does accept share transfers from a T212 Invest account, not just cash, but full stock transfers as well. I then reached out to T212, and they initially said it isn’t supported but have now escalated my request to their transfers team.
Since IBKR has repeatedly confirmed that they can process this, I’m assuming T212 does handle these transfers but perhaps only on a case-by-case basis.
Just wanted to share my experience in case it helps others in the same situation.
Hi @coisan i had actually the opposite problem when i wanted desperately to get rid of the horrible IBKR user experience and to move to trading 212 and now i can do it and im so happy so why you want to switch all your position to IBKR , what do you see that i(and many others) dont see ?
For inbound GIA transfers, you should submit the request on both ends. It’s preferable to start in our app first, so we’re sure we have everything we need and are ready on our side while we wait for IBKR. After that, you can submit a transfer request in the IBKR portal.
For outbound GIA transfers, you only need to submit the request in the IBKR portal. IBKR will then contact us directly. We’ll review the request, log it, and ask you to authorise it through the app.
