Hey is there a reason TSMC is view only for isa but able to buy for invest accounts?
Primary listing is not on a HMRC recognised exchange.
If you use search you will find out more info, you’ll be surprised to learn you’re not the 75th person to ask this.
Am sure there are ETF’s or managed funds with exposure to TSMC that can be bought in ISA
@Scrooge_McCodf - right on the dot.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd has its main listing on the Taiwan Stock Exchange/TWSE, which is not a recognized stock exchange by the HMRC:
It is also listed on the Frankfurt exchange. Some other providers have recognised this and have allowed Tsmc holdings in ISAs.
I can’t see it listed in Germany!
The ADR is, sure.
The issue here is the Ordinary Common Stock of TSMC. Where is that Listed other than Taiwan?
If you have one of those ISAs and bought TSMC, your ISA will be “broken” out of tax-free status. and has to “repaired” retrospectively by the ISA manager. This is not something a broker can decide/accept/enforce bilaterally.
ISA rules are clear, only the “primary listing” matters. Secondary listings ADR/ADSs are all irrelevant. You don’t even need to google it, or read HMRCs clear guidance, if you just search this forum you’ll find 100+ instances of these explanations.
Looks like AJBell are having a nightmare with ISA compliance.
They now public say “no” to TSMC on the website but I still have a TSMC holding in my AJBell ISA.
Oh dear!
