Today I wanted to see all shares of a stock from a pie, and it was kinda impossible.
First of all, yes, I learnt that to sell from a pie, I have to use the withdraw button. That’s fine. A bit odd and not too obvious, but it’s ok, I can use that.
However, when I’m withdrawing, the slider for the amount I want to withdraw never matches the exact amount of money I have in a single stock in the pie. It’s always off by a fraction. So I can never click “Next”. I tried to type the exact value in, but that didn’t work (let alone the fact that the total money in a stock keeps fluctuating).
I actually couldn’t get it to work, and after wrestling a good while, I ended up having to export that stock from the pie, go outside the pie and sell the stock. I had to do that for a few stocks in a few pies, and it was a mess. Too much hassle to sell, and then cross my fingers that I remember which stock came out of which pie so I can add it back. All while having to adjust and re-adjust the percentages of each stock in the pie.
Sorry, but this bit of the UI kinda sucks! Please fix this bit.
It would be amazing if there was a simple “Sell” button for each holding inside the pie that works the same as the sell outside. Or if exporting from a pie only moved the shares outside the pie, but the symbol itself stayed in (i.e. less hassle, no need to re-add, no need to adjust percentages… etc).
Can you do this if you change the drop down to custom?
I agree generally with the suggestion though - a sell all button in the pie next to each stock or a swipe to remove or something like that would be really useful. I export them currently.
Yeah, exporting seems to be the only way, but it can be quite messy. I have 6 similar stocks split between 2 pies (I’m trying to see if some of them are way worse or better than the others).
Exporting means I need to remember which pie the stock came from so I can add it back. It’s quite a hassle when you wanna do that for multiple stocks. Especially that these are volatile stocks, and when they jump you wanna sell quickly.
I really agree. I have been meaning to post about pies for a while. They could be so much more powerful and easy to use. At the moment they are ok for a very narrow use - putting money in and leaving it or periodically topping up - but they could be much more useful that that and far easier to use.
It is ridiculous (imo) that you can’t sell within the pie and just leave the proceeds of the sale as cash within the pie and then later just buy something within the pie from the cash that there. Having to export from the pie and then sell outside the pie just destroys the merit of having the pie in the first place (imo). As you say if you want to sell a few stock it can become so so difficult.
I think pies were originally created with the idea of long-term diversification in mind. E.g. I have a mag 7 pie where I wanna DCA into these stocks long term. Pies are perfect for that.
But I think many of us are treating pies as pots. Like here’s my long term passive pot, here’s my slightly more risky pot, and here’s the pot where I’m experimenting with swing trading. I think this is where pies are failing. We mainly wanna keep the funds in these pots separate, but we’re forced to keep exporting stocks and funds outside the pie.
