Youâre searching through your ISA or your Invest, sorry?
Yup. This is correct. You can only contribute to one S&S ISA per year. But that ISA does not have to be in the same place at all times you contribute. So you could start off contributing here, ask them to move the ISA somewhere else and then continue to contribute to it in the new once it has been moved there.
ah ok thanks Iâll look at alternatives who give access to hong kong.
I was searching for SE in ISA. Used to work as I held it and sold a few weeks ago. Wanted to buy back in on the dip but couldnât.
Yes. I think itâs because the underlying asset doesnât trade on a HMRC recognised exchange (Essentially unlisted), so canât be held in a ISA.
@Finki (if not pissed ) might be able to shed some light on this from a regulatory standpoint?
Could you please add Zomedica Pharmaceuticals Corp ticker symbol $ZOM
The duck speaketh the truth.
But I held it in ISA until just 7 days ago?
Yes, itâs recently come to the attention of Trading 212 that you shouldnât have.
Hang on but it trades on the NYSE?
Itâs an ADR.
As I said the underlying asset (i.e. the common stock) has to trade on a HMRC recognised exchange.
But so are JD, Nokia, Ericsson, Toyota etc. and theyâre all fine?
Their common stock all trade on registered exchanges, I believe. Nokia, for example, trades on HEL (Nasdaq Helsinki).
So what youâre saying is because SE isnt (I think?) traded on the singapore stock exchange we cant hold it in an ISA? even though many already did, and many continue to?
Thatâs the one. SEAâs common stock is (I believe) traded over the counter. As such, we cannot hold its ADR in an ISA and shouldnât have been able to before. You are correct in thinking that many (including myself) currently do. My plan is to wait and sit still until 212 tell me what they propose to do about it.
Essentially yes.
Itâs a big issue.
Hargreaves Lansdown had this issue in 2018 (with Baba and Tencent iirc). It took a while to unravel.
what a crazy situation. very frustrating.
What could be the intention of the rule?
No idea. Youâd be be asking HMRC.
So one needs to have non isa account as well to invest in these stocks.
Also, these stocks are fine to be in ETFs?
Yes because youâre buying units of an ETF not the underlying holdings in this case.
