Verifying device without camera?

Just wanted to add another vote for how annoying this is on PC.

I made my PC a trusted device in January and it’s asking to do it again now in the first week of March. I assume firefox updates trigger it?

A more useful security measure would be to disable the debit card completely!

In the following message I’m not going to complain about having to do video verification etc, I fully understand the security requirements for that so I’m with you guys

However, what a comment mentioned about alert fatigue (due to the endless stream of emails received if one user chooses not to use video verification) is in fact an actual security issue.

I think a viable option would be to implement a ā€œsnooze email alerts for 7 daysā€ checkbox, which (if ticked when the user successfully logins via 2FA and without doing video verification) will stop email login notifications for 7 days if the login is detected from the same device/location.

This means the user won’t be overloaded with notification emails for a week if he keeps logging in from the same device (which to be clear, will still require the 2FA code), in turn making the user much more alert should they then suddenly receive a new ā€œLogin from a new deviceā€œ email generated by a malicious actor.

I understand that sentiment. However, why not connect the camera on your phone to being the camera on your PC (using Bluetooth or USB)? That way you can do the video verification.
I did a video verification earlier this year and apart from needing to login for the first time I change PCs (for which I use a password manager) I have not had any issues. I certainly never receive emails about it.
I appreciate that there are a few people with a PC and do not have a smartphone and who are T212 users but they must be very few.

It would be much easier from a user pov to be able to verify another device from an already verified device than get a webcam, or connect your phone camera to your PC. I’m already verified on 4 devices that have a camera (two phones, tablet, laptop). And I get a prompt on those devices when I login from an ā€˜untrusted’ source.

It is a nightmare on your laptop at 330am when you are quote reasonably panicking about being hacked out of your accounts. Humans on the end of a lien would be great. I can’t take the stress and fear so I think I’ll have to move out of 212.

I just want to add my complaint as well. Why can other banking platforms figure out how to pop a qr code on my screen i can scan with my phone and then record the video that way.

It makes absolutely no sense that i need to be on my laptop or my phone to trade on Trading 212.

I actually chose Trading 212 because they had a reasonably good brownse trading platform. But now when i have to put in a code all the time, not just every 24 hours as one of the Trading 212 guys said, I’m seriously thinking about moving somewhere else.

I’ve posted another thread on the similar topic and only noticed this thread later.

I see the reply from @Bogi.H about the ā€œtrusted deviceā€ but I think its excessive when phones already have biometric verification and several banking app work on the same feature without users giving videos or facial images to every other app.

This Onfido is serious concern so much so that I will move to another platform for own security from Onfido.

I feel like this needs bumped. Haven’t seen a t212 reply since the threads were merged. Is this even being looked at? We used to be able to trust a browser for 30 days. Now I get several login confirmation emails a day because of this ridiculous login process. Even refreshing the tab means having to re-enter the MFA code.

Remember, the wording is: ā€œLogin from a new device - Your Trading 212 account was logged in to from a device you don’t usually useā€

Let us trust the browser again!

It appears Trading 212 no longer cares about safety of customer data (from Onfido or similar 3rd parties). With the new tax year, I have started transfer of my S&S ISA from Trading 212 to Interactive Investors.

Previous Incidents of Onfido security flaws exposing user PII to hackers.

Tell me this.

Why do I need to record a video on the Desktop IF I have confirmed the 2FA code on my mobile that has been video verified ???

Surely that means the Desktop is a trusted device, if confirmed through mobile.

Its utterly ridiculous.

I’m actively moving all my money to another broker just because of this… I enjoyed T212 for 13 months but this is extremely annoying for me, personally.

Starting to get that way myself. Only way this gets fixed is if people keep responding to this thread.

I understand your view. However, do remember that you can use the camera on a smartphone as the PC camera or you can buy a USB camera for Ā£10. Moving your money for want of a cheap (or free) camera is a ā€˜courageous’ decision.

A workaround that requires the user to pay money is not acceptable. This issue needs a real fix. We used to be able to trust a browser for 30 days. We no longer can. I can’t see how this is anything other than a bug to be resolved.

I have used my browser (Chrome) on two different laptops for many months (certainly longer than 30 days) and I have not had to use any camera. The last time that I used my camera (for T212) was when I first bought the second laptop and it was used as part of the trusting process. I suspect that your problems will also be solved by connecting a camera to your desktop PC on one occasion.
The requirement will be caused by security (or possibly regulatory) decisions. In my experience these measures are rarely reverted especially if that means a reduction in perceived security.
As I mentioned there is a workaround whereby if you connect your mobile phone to your PC then you can use your phone’s camera on your PC. If you already have a phone with a camera then this is free and does not require the user to pay money. I would make the comment that the charges for T212 are generally lower than most other providers so you can use that saving to pay for a camera. However, If you are not prepared to do either of the above solutions then I suggest that you move your money to another provider as soon as possible as you are obviously not happy with the service from T212.
I am getting a bit fed up with people moaning about this ā€˜feature’ when, to me, there is are easy workarounds.

@PStaveley Why do you even care? Why reply if it doesn’t impact you? This issue is recent and impacts a lot of people. Nobody wants to buy a camera, or plug in their phone, or perform MFA several times a day, or receive email spam for logging in to a ā€œnewā€ browser. This used to work. We want a fix, not a workaround.

I’ve had to set up mail filtering rules to move login notifications matching my known devices to a hidden separate folder just so any that still show up in the main folder are actually useful. All a bit silly, really.

It is absolutely fine that you don’t have a clue about regulation and/or security. Why do you feel the need post about it? May be it’s a generational difference but I don’t feel like dancing in front of a camera, to be uploaded into a random 3rd party (trust me bro, it’s safe) to manage my money.

I use several different platforms for managing portfolios of quite decent sizes, this is the only platform that dictates such farcical requirements to use a computer.

I also have no camera on my PC and I refuse to dance in front of a camera to manage my money. This has nothing to do with security. Most of the things they recommend does not even exist.

this simply is not completely true. marking a device is not optional, it’s mandatory to access all parts of the website. It simply is not possible to do with a password + 2FA

I have raised an official complaint in December as well, they (claim) responded in December, and I just received their answer and a ā€œscreenshotā€ of someones email that shows they’ve sent a response.

I’m in the process of swapping a few final correspondence with them, where they keep digging into a whole by claiming I could use some non-existant features in their system.

They even offered me 50Ā£ for the ā€œinconvenience I’ve been throughā€

I’ve also looked into IBKR isa, they charge 0.0 something for us trades and 3Ā£ for uk, any of those is simply less than ā€œfreeā€ charges in T212.

It’s surreal they are forcing me out of the platform for such an asinine reasons, after I’ve been a customer since 2018, and I have quite a healthy ISA (as healthy as an ISA can get with the 20k annual limit)

I highly doubt ombudsman will enforce them to fix it, but it’d be nice to get these complaints on record. They can simply edit the T&C and attach a clause saying ā€œyou now have to hold a banana while taking a selfieā€ and what are you going to do about it?

I was struggling to get onto this site as i thought my 212 account would be how i log in, its separate for some reason..?

however, I found a fix and thought id share as it took my a while to work out. my issue was that i couldnt log into pc without the option for video authentication. I then tried on icognito as i had a hunch and it worked, my phone got sent a code and it let me use it to log in on desktop.

I went back to chrome and went into settings > privacy and security > Site settings (at the bottom) > view permissions & data stored accross sites > find trading 212 and delete data. After this you should be able to log in without video verification
