PayPal as a payment method

Many brokers already use PayPal as a payment method – why doesn’t trading212 use PayPal as well? Would make things a LOT easier considering not all bank accept incoming payments in USD, and PayPal conversion fees are acceptable.

Great to know! I’m glad that there is an immense amount of transparency between t212 and the members.

Can’t we just transfer the deposited money from CFD in to invest account? or will they be locked in CFD?

@ivan do you know the exact date for when PayPal integration for CFD accounts will be available?

We’re all set up and the certification has been completed successfully. It is just a matter of time until we receive the formal “Go live” confirmation from PayPal. Hopefully , later this week we will have a more accurate ETA, however, my personal opinion is that we will start March with PayPal as an available payment option.

A couple questions on this:

  1. If my investment account is in GBP can I pay in from PayPal in USD and move it to the investment account?
  2. would that money appear in CFD as USD or GBP? if GBP do you do the conversion or PayPal? Same with going from CFD to invest account
  3. Isn’t there an inactivity fee with CFD accounts? so if I use CFD simply to move into investments and then don’t top up again after a while I’ll be hit with a fee?
  4. any fee using paypal or going from CFD to invest (other than the inactivity fee potentially)
  5. presumably that paypal money could eventually be withdrawn to a bank account and doesn’t have to return to paypal?

Was wondering the same thing as @ukcz, hopefully someone from T212 can clarify.

I’m not from T212 but going on my basic assumptions I think the answers would be akong the lines of:

1 - valid funds should go through regardless of currency
2 - the funds should go through the FX to match the currency of your portfolio (unless multi-currency is released for clients)
3 - 2 part answer from the Client Agreement:

13.7. An inactivity fee may become payable by You in case there are no generated transactions on your Account for a period of at least six consecutive months (180 days) and is due to the fact that Trading 212 services are continually provided to You for trading in CFDs, regardless of your actual use.

.
.
.

13.9. If your Account balance is zero or the inactivity fee will bring the balance of your Account to zero or negative, We will only charge such part of the fee that brings the account balance to zero.

the account balance in question I believe is the CFD account balance, T212 please correct me if I am wrong. so transferring funds out to your invest/ISA should not cause an issue if you leave the account empty afterwords. or perhaps make some token transactions every couple of months?

4 - the are no fees I think for moving funds between your T212 accounts. however its possible that paypal may charge a fee for paying the money into your account. we shall find out once T212 elaborate on that new payment method some more

5 - this would sound reasonable considering that paypal funds are typically withdrawn from the bank account when its own balance is zero. perhaps they check the accounts are the same and thus send the money straight to your bank?

  1. If my investment account is in GBP can I pay in from PayPal in USD and move it to the investment account?

Sure. It works that way with all supported currencies. And yes, you’ll be able to move funds freely between accounts.

  1. would that money appear in CFD as USD or GBP? if GBP do you do the conversion or PayPal? Same with going from CFD to invest account

If your Invest account is in GBP > the funds will be allocated in GBP. The conversion is done on PayPal level.

  1. isn’t there an inactivity fee with CFD accounts? so if I use CFD simply to move into investments and then don’t top up again after a while I’ll be hit with a fee?

Not at all - we don’t apply any fees whatsoever. If you have both Invest and CFD, and you’re actively using only the Invest, then you’ll be considered as an active client, and your accounts will remain unaffected.*

  1. any fee using paypal or going from CFD to invest (other than the inactivity fee potentially)

Nope - it will be free of charge.

  1. presumably that paypal money could eventually be withdrawn to a bank account and doesn’t have to return to paypal?

It depends, and our risk management team will determine this after checking an account, however, as mentioned before - we are flexible

*I wanted to share more details about the quoted Inactivity fee, as it provokes confusion.

We applied it in the past only due to one reason: we had inactive (for over six months) CFD accounts with funds. Respectively, we couldn’t just suspend them, nor outright refund the amount (due to different reasons). Therefore, we had to make their account balance equal to 0, so we could proceed with the suspension.

As a matter of fact, whenever a client (charged with inactivity) contacted us, we always refunded the charged sums.

PayPal is now up & running!

Just a reminder - currently, it will be only available for CFD accounts (due to internal PayPal regulations).

Is there any advantage of using PayPal for funds and withdrawals? Anyway, it’s always great to have more options to choose from!

You can get funded instantly via PayPal and the source could either be a card, including American Express, bank accounts and even your PP balance. So a very good addition.

For funding I understand. But the way back, if I withdrawal to PayPal, I’m not sure if it is good. If I want to transfer the balance in PayPal (after the withdrawal) to a bank account would be there some fee?
