Not Being Given Free Shares For Referrals (Complaint)

Itā€™s apparent that he did not read the rules for the promotion fully as he was intending on getting a share worth Ā£100. Itā€™s Up to Ā£100. It never states you get Ā£100 every time.
I canā€™t fathom the logic of wanting to rant and rave, for a free service. They paid YOU to invest.
If it was a few years ago, you would have had to pay Ā£100 per year to open an account and also Ā£10 per trade in and out.

This is the stuff I cannot understand:

I am extremely disappointed with Trading212 overall, as while I enjoy the app and have a fair amount of money invested (for the average person) the customer support is so poor that to be honest Iā€™m considering leaving - especially when Robinhood makes its way over to the UK.

You need to ask yourself, are you here to make money on the platform or to make money from the platform. Seems the latter.

This is not always the case. Once I got TLRY while the other party got RDSB. Not too important in my opinion whether or not you receive the same share, but still wanted to point out.

I totally disagree with this description. I thought his original post was well written and quite measured.

You quoted him complaining about poor customer support. Whatā€™s wrong with that? His description of how heā€™s been treated sounds very frustrating.

In my experience thereā€™s a big difference between the support you get on this forum, and what you receive via email or the ā€œContact usā€ option.

No they donā€™t, the person who I referred got a different share.

Ok lets get this worked out.

  1. Does not read the terms and conditions, as they think they are entitled to Ā£100 share everytime.
  2. Receives free share after contacting support, but still unhappy.
For some reason the second one did not go through. Although he carries on, albeit unhappy still with the platform and refers friends and family.
  3. Says he enjoys the app, but then threatens to leave for robinhood
  4. If adblockers are used then all tracking cookies canā€™t be registered, so a fair reasonable assumption from Trading212. They canā€™t help this, itā€™s his choice after all.
  5. Continues to state customer service is inadequate, although he still thinks he is entitled to Ā£400?

Lastly, he mentions that the free shares would have made a significant amount of his portfolio. So itā€™s great that he has got a foot in the door with investing, but by this point it just appears that the sole reason for setting up the accounts were to accrue ā€œfree sharesā€ building up a portfolio for free. Thatā€™s the bit that doesnā€™t sit well with me, as it just doesnā€™t seem a legitimate issue anymore, just a disgruntled customer that wanted something for nothing.

So, in my opinion, if he used adblockers and was relying on the free shares to be a significant percentage of his portfolio, just move on and accept what he has got.

Trading212 responded by email, as he mentions and honored the free shares, and considering the coronavirus issue and having to migrate to work at home, they have had a lot to deal with besides issuing free shares out to people.

Itā€™s free. Like I said, 1 year ago it would have cost Ā£200 minimum to setup a trading account, now itā€™s all free and he is getting free shares. Win win, he should just be happy and move on.

This conversation about the free shares reminds me of something:

I created and funded my ISA account at the very end of the 2019/20 tax year. I hadnā€™t decided what my plans were for the 2020/21 tax year.

However, my wife created her ISA in the 2020/21 tax year and the free share I received as a result was considered a subscription to my 2020/21 allowance. By that stage, I had decided to stick with Trading 212, so it didnā€™t matter.

However, I wonder what wouldā€™ve happened if Iā€™d opened a 2020/21 ISA with a different provider or simply wanted to delay any decisions about my 2020/21 until later in the tax year?

Iā€™m just mentioning this in case itā€™s a scenario that @Team212 hasnā€™t considered. Iā€™m happy with how it worked out for me.

@Supraman

I think under that scenario, say you did plan on setting up another ISA with another provider, due to the amount being small, I believe this could be explained away but you would need to contact the UK Gov site to explain this. Again, not guaranteed but I have heard of this being ok under similar circumstances where people have funded a new ISA with say Ā£5 then wanted to change.

Hope that helps.

I think weā€™ll just have to agree to disagree.

My interpretation of his words is that he still hasnā€™t received everything that heā€™s entitled to, despite his considerable efforts. It still baffles me why heā€™s received so much negativity for politely expressing his frustrations.

Heā€™s brought 4 new users to the platform. Doesnā€™t he deserve to be listened to with some respect?

Interesting. Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Yea, if he is owed a free share, then he will be able to receive it iā€™m sure.
People just donā€™t like to see a situation become abused I think, and itā€™s all too common for someone to just open an account and refer everyone they have come in contact with, wait 3 months, then cash out. It could ruin it for everyone at that stage, so I hope it wasnā€™t done with that as the sole intention.

I donā€™t want to create a whole new topic for this simple question, so hopefully nobody minds me asking it here:

Does anybody else sometimes find that when they reply to a specific post (not a reply to the topic) that it doesnā€™t get treated as a reply? Iā€™ve experienced a scenario where a new post looks like a reply (i.e. it shows who Iā€™m replying to at the top) but when it actually gets posted itā€™s not linked to the post. I post from my iPhone and my Windows laptop. It definitely sometimes happens on the former; Iā€™m not sure about the latter.

Fair enough! Good debate!

Yes, Iā€™ve noticed this too. Sometimes marks as a direct reply, sometimes not. And yes, I am aware of the two separate reply buttons and do mean this in the context of using the one I would expect to generate a direct reply.

In this caseā€¦ it has worked! Huzzah!

If your replying to the last post it doesnā€™t show that icon as itā€™s immediately after the post your replying to.

That might explain it! Iā€™ll look out for that.

EDIT: This post proves it!

For one, this free share feature seem to bring more negative then positive.

If you do search "free share " term, I didnā€™t find any single topic, Thank you T212 for giving us something for nothing or similar.

It is most topics about how people didnā€™t get it or it wasnā€™t 100 GBP, but 8GBP or lessā€¦

I guess t212 marketing has data which considers this as good/attractive mechanism.

Personally I feel it attracts more trouble and negativity. Those funds could be spent at hiring more support, development or whatevercorporateuseful.

Cheers :beers:

I disagree. Itā€™s hard to encourage people to join the stock market, but the free share has helped me encourage people to start investing. They do it ā€œfor the free shareā€ and buy another share with the money they deposited, and then they slowly get into it. Without it, I would find it very difficult to convince people to get started!

Really interesting seeing the discussion after a few days from people on both sides of the fence, and I think itā€™s important to clarify a few things in the original post.

I do enjoy T212 thoroughly. Itā€™s a very easy to use app, and while it has its flaws I see it as an outstanding platform which will continue to grow and dominate this sector. However, there will likely be strong competition in the near future from US brokers making their way over for UK/EU customers - and some may be seen as more advantageous without improvements.

I am very grateful for the promotion offered by T212 as it is ultimately a very generous thing to do which sets it above its current competitors at any value. However there are (I feel) issues in the way this is presented - as I would also say about WeBull for example, who advertise up to $1300 if Iā€™m correct. This inherently implies to new customers that they may gain a share of quality companies such as Google, Tesla, Apple etc, making a share of Ford (or god forbid Hertz!) a very disappointing result and arguably misrepresentation. While not quite on the same scale with T212 the principle remains the same, and that instantly draws an element of mistrust which I know has affected my own investment decisions with the platform and those of the people I have referred. Transparency over the allocation would be greatly welcomed.

Another element of mistrust is generated from vague and somewhat confrontational customer service through the appā€˜s contact section in cases when it seemingly doesnā€™t benefit the company. For example, after registering with T212 using a friendā€™s referral link neither of us received the promotional share until after we both had contacted them numerous times - ultimately being responded to over a month later and after we both held account values above Ā£1k invested, with only myself being given a promotional code. On subsequent occasions using my referral link no shares have been received by either party when using Apple products during the registration process. Despite highlighting this and providing significant evidence to customer service, the cases have been consistently ignored, responded to with unrelated statements, or accusations of ad-blocking software etc - which simply isnā€™t true.

I hope this clears something up. Yes I love the platform, and yes I am grateful for any promotional shares - though there is clearly a system fault somewhere relating to this, and the support I have received so far through the app has been consistently problematic to the point where I am hesitant to trust it with the level of funding that I would like to place into my account just in case something did actually go wrong, and I believe it may have also pushed away the people I have referred in favour of other services (including commission platforms from brokers and banks) as they arenā€™t invested yet. It is also preventing me from referring any other people which is to every partyā€™s detriment.

Thereā€™s really no need for any heated comments, and I apologise if thatā€™s how the frustration of this post came across - but itā€™s just constructive criticism. :slightly_smiling_face:

I feel maybe the promotion would be better if it was a together range. Represented as from Ā£5 to Ā£100 rather than up to Ā£100, slight detail that lowers your expectations by showing the more likely lower limit, you would be happier with getting Ā£8 then
